It all started the day my daughter asked me : \u201cMom, I want to straighten my hair\u2026 to look like you.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

At that moment, I thought I misheard her. I asked why. She answered with disarming innocence: \u201cBecause you have straight hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt my heart tighten. How could I explain to her that her hair was beautiful, natural, full of life\u2026 when I had been straightening mine with chemicals for years?<\/p>\n

And when she asked why I was using relaxers\u2026 I had no answer. That\u2019s when the realization hit, sudden, obvious, necessary.<\/p>\n
