It all started the day my daughter asked me : “Mom, I want to straighten my hair… to look like you.”
At that moment, I thought I misheard her. I asked why. She answered with disarming innocence: “Because you have straight hair.”
I felt my heart tighten. How could I explain to her that her hair was beautiful, natural, full of life… when I had been straightening mine with chemicals for years?
I told her: ” Your hair is beautiful, it’s strong. It’s natural. It’s you.”
And when she asked why I was using relaxers… I had no answer. That’s when the realization hit, sudden, obvious, necessary.
That day, I looked at my daughter and promised her: “I will never straighten my hair again.”
She smiled at me with the purest pride. This little girl had unknowingly just changed my life. But going natural… wasn’t easy. I didn’t know how to care for my hair anymore. I had to relearn everything: how to hydrate, nourish, and protect. Back then, there was almost nothing for natural hair.
